Children deserve to be surrounded by beauty. A beautiful environment at school is conducive to learning and encourages respect for one’s school, respect for others and respect for oneself. Participation in maintaining such an environment nurtures a sense of community and develops school pride. Accordingly, the Cooke Foundation established a new award in 2008 to recognize exemplary completed projects that enhance the overall appearance and ambiance of Hawai’i public schools. The Cooke Foundation Beautification Award of $5,000 is now presented to one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school every other year. All public schools, including charter schools, are eligible to apply. Participation in the project by students, parents and faculty/staff is required. Projects may also include participation by outside organizations, including businesses. 2017 nominations will be accepted from July 1, 2017 through September 1, 2017.

Previous Beautification Award recipients include Aikahi Elementary School on O`ahu and Lokelani Intermediate School on Maui (2013); Iliahi Elementary School, Washington Middle School, and Leilehua High School on O`ahu (2012); Kawananakoa Middle School on O`ahu, Haiku Elementary School on Maui, and Lahainaluna High School also on Maui (2011); Mokulele Elementary School, Washington Middle School, and Roosevelt High School on O`ahu (2010); Prince Jonah Kuhio Elementary School on O`ahu, Waimea Middle Public Conversion Charter School on Hawai`i Island, and West Hawai`i Explorations Academy also on Hawai`i Island (2009); and S.W.
